CENSUS DETAILS - ENGLAND

The 1841 Census confirms the following details regarding Dennis Carr's father Henry Carr;

Henry Carr age 25 (need to check if this age is correct or should it be 35) was living at 55 Grindle Gate, in Sheffield England with his wife Frances age 25. Frances was not born in the County ie. - the County of "York" (Sheffield). Rather Frances came from Ireland and Henry from Middlesex London.

Recorded children at the time on the Census were:

Dennis age 6, born Yorkhire

Julia age 2, born Yorkhire

Note, that other known children to this marriage, at the time, including Sam Carr and Mary Ann Carr were not recorded at this address, in the 1841 Census.

The 1851 Census (taken on the night of 30th March, 1851) records Henry Carr and family living at No. 4 Grindle Gate Sheffield, in the Ecclesiastical District of Hollis Croft. Henry Carr age 42 years, Head, and a "Cordwainer" by profession. The records reaffirm that Henry was born in Middlesex, London BishopGate 4. (Note this suggests that Henry was born in 1808/09)

Henry's wife was recorded in the census as Fanny, age 39 years and born in Ireland.

The children were recorded as follows:

Dennis age 15 years and occupation "Cordwainer", born Yorkshire Sheffield

Julia 11 years Scholar, born Yorkshire Sheffield

Ralph 3 years of age, born Yorkshire Sheffield

Henry son, age 1 year, born Yorkshire Sheffield.

It is worthy of note that "Cordwainer" is another name for Shoemaker and that "Cordwain" is a name for Spanish leather formerly used for shoes. Of Cordwan, - ewan of Cordova. Also, Cordovan is the name of leather of Cordova [f. Sp. Cordovan(o)]

The 1851 Census Census records show possible relations to Henry Carr (to be confirmed) as follows: The commonality is basically that both Henry Carr and Richard were born in Middlesex, London, they lived nearby in Sheffield and both have children named Sam/Samuel, Ralph/Ralph.

Living at 31 Mill Sands Street, Sheffield (A possible brother or cousin)

Richard Carr age 46, Traveller, born Middlesex London

Harriet, wife, age 38, born in Yorkshire

Rosa age 15, born in Yorkshire

Samuel age 13, born in Yorkshire

Ralph age 12, born in Yorkshire

Living at No. 4 Club Yard/Mill Sands Street, Sheffield (A possible sister to Henry or sister-in-law etc.) The commonality is once again that both Henry Carr and Margaret Carr were born in Middlesex, London, they lived nearby in Sheffield and have daughters Rose/Rosa, Mary/Mary Ann.

Margaret Carr (Head) married, 27 years of age, born Middlesex London

Rose daughter 7 years of age, scholar born Yorkshire Sheffield

Mary daughter 5 years of age, scholar born Nottingham, Nottingham

John son, 3 years of age born Yorkshire Sheffield

The 1861 Census (about 20th April 1861) confirms Henry Carr and family living at 35 Silver Street, Sheffield. Henry aged 54 years, Head and Occupation Shoemaker employing 2 men and born Middlesex London. (Note this suggests that Henry was born in 1807/08)

Henry's wife was recorded as Frances Carr wife, age 46, born Ireland.

The children were recorded as follows:

Ralph son age 12, born Yorkshire Sheffield

Henry son age 9, born Yorkshire Sheffield

Julia Malone daughter, married, age 20, born Yorkshire Sheffield

Other persons recorded as being at the home at the time of the 1861 census are as follows:

Christopher Malone, Son-In-Law, married, Age 22, born Ireland

William Staniland Lodger, unmarried, age 27, Shoemaker.

Other shoemakers also lived at Silver Street, at the time of the 1861 Census, including some from Ireland. For example, the census shows a Henry Malone, Head, age 53, shoemaker born in Ireland lived at 40 Silver Street with daughter Emma T age 8 years, born in Yorkshire. This Henry Malone may have also been the father (or some other relative) of the Christopher Malone mentioned above.

The 1861 Census also shows Dennis Carr living at Baily Street, Court 1 (check if this is the correct street as I have also identified a Bailey Street) Sheffiled, St James. Dennis and his wife Mary Ann Carr are in fact boarders with a Jane Milner. The details as recorded are as follows:

Jane Milner (Head) Married, age 50, Sewer, born Yorkshire Sheffield

Dennis Carr Boarder, age 24, Boot and Shoe maker, born Yorkshire Sheffield.

Mary Ann Carr Boarder, age 21, married, born Yorkshire Sheffield.

Emily Carr, boarder, age 1, born Yorkshire Sheffield.

Barry, a friend of Anna Wrights, advised Anna that he has sighted within the Mormon Index under the Dignum entry children to Dennis Dignum and Mary Smith entered as being Baptised at Norfolk Row. Norfolk Row is the same church as Dennis Carr and his brothers and sister were baptised within. The entries under Dennis Dignum and Mary Smith are as follows:

Mary Ann Dignum 11.4.1830

Peter Dignum 3.7.1836

Thomas Dignum 13.1.1833

Speculation is that Dennis Dignum was the brother to Frances Dignum, wife of Henry Carr and that Dennis Carr was named after his uncle ie. Dennis Dignum.
